“Cruisin’ for Kids” a Success!

Hagerty Insurance Agency teamed up with the Presbyterian Children’s Hospital, Tach Twisters car club, and the Rolling Thunder dealership to offer the young patients the first annual “Cruisin’ for Kids.” The event was held on the lawn of the Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina and featured an intimate gathering of thirty-five collectors. Their twenty-five cars ranged from a 1957 Austin-Healey to a 1968 Chevy Camaro.

It was an excellent combination of collectors, volunteers, and families coming together for a common cause: the kids. The children interacted with collectors and their cars. They were also able to sit in the judge’s seat and pick their favorite car. Darren Frank’s 1969 Iso Grifo was the lucky recipient of the Kid’s Choice Award.

The event could not have been a success without the help and support of the Hospital itself. Key figures such as Michael Vaccaro, the Senior Director of Women’s and Children’s Services, say such events “make kids feel like kids even in the hospital” and “creates memories, which give them something to carry through the tough times."

Eveie Hatley, a member of the Tach Twisters, was present with her 1968 Camaro. Hartley stressed the importance of getting kids involved in the hobby and said she would choose an event for the benefit of others “over a drag race any day!”

Although Walt Hollifield, part of the Foundation Board at the Hospital, was unable to attend due to a prior obligation, he received report of the event and felt “everything about it was a success.” He saw it as an opportunity to “bring the outside world in” for the kids, while raising awareness for the Children’s Hospital.

It was an extraordinary inaugural event that could not have been possible without all the hands on board. It was another example of how the collector car community not only enjoys their cars, but also uses them for the benefit of others.

HOT ROD Power Tour 2010

There's nothing like cruis'n the open road, and that's what the HOT ROD Power Tour is all about! There were hundreds of classics and collectable cars cruising through seven cities in seven days, and along the way Hagerty Insurance caught up with the cruisers at Coker Tire in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Coker Tire had entertainment for all the cruising enthusiasts with a live band, tours of Coker Tire and Honest Charles Speed Shop. The live onsite radio broadcast at Coker Tire described the events, and encouraged enthusiast participation. It was a remarkable showing of all kinds of classics!

How do you like these White Walls? Is it all about the tire?

The Mopar's kept on rolling into the venue and sliding in their spaces on the street...which was known as Mopar Alley. The Mopar's ranged from the new challenger to the classic '70 Plymouth Cuda AAR.

Just one of the unique custom classics at the Coker Tire Cruise! Look at those headers!

Classic custom with flames...and white walls!

The HOT ROD Power Tour of 2010 started in Newton, IA at the Iowa Speedway, and ending at the U.S.S Alabama in Mobile, AL. The seven day journey of non-stop cruising came to an end with high expectations for the 2011 HOT ROD Power Tour!

Cruis'n the South

The collector car hobby in the South is in full force from mid-March to late November, and it's exciting to be a part of all the activity in the area! On any given day, your bound to drive upon a cruise-in at a local restaurant, ice cream store or downtown venue. Each event has a unique style or method for creating a great car event with various activities for the young and young at heart.
Ford Roadster (Cruisin the Plantation-Mooresville)

A cruise-in has a unique atmosphere drawing together a group of classic car owners and enthusiast from all over the area. The exciting part surround a cruise is there will always be a rare or unique classic car rolling in the venue. Once you notice a group of enthusiast hovering over a classic then you know there is something special about that car. The cruise-in event is usually during the week later in the day from 5:00 to 9:00 pm and includes entertainment, 50/50 drawing, music and more. The cruise-in is a great social scene for enthusiast to "kick tires and talk cars."
1968 Shelby Cobra (Brusters Cruise-Huntersville)

The event provides excitement of the hobby and creates entertainment for the whole family. For me, I love the relaxation of the cruise-in, and listening to the stories of why a classic has value to the car owner. The cruise-in creates an escape from the work week for enthusiasts. For example, the anticipation of the cruise-in each Wednesday night is a great way to spend the evening with other enthusiasts and talk about the unique stories behind their favorite classics!

1923 Rolls Royce (Cars and Coffee-Charlotte)
More than ever cruise-ins are being hosted by car clubs, which raise donations to a charity of choice. This is an exciting way to spark interest in the collector car hobby while showing goodwill to their special charity. This shows the collector car hobby is one of the greatest hobbies throughout!

1955 Chevy Bel Air (South 21 Cruise-Matthews)

1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator (DQ Cruise-Hickory)

1955 Buick Roadmaster (Oakboro Cruise)

1965 Shelby Cobra 289 (Downtown Mooresville Cruise-In) I think Mr. Tom Cotter would like this car...

The Hunter and the Hunted - McKeel Hagerty

A reflection from McKeel Hagerty -

"This photo was taken last week in a farmer's field in South Dakota. The truck is an International and it won't be moving under its own power ever again. The hunter is a guy who seems to shoot with his eyes completely closed…but that is another story.

As I reflect on this truck I wonder how many cool old vehicles like this are sinking into the ground in farmer's fields. They are not valuable "barn finds" or hidden gems but rather the detritus of another time, a utility vehicle that lost its utility. This one probably spent its years of use hauling light loads around the fields of Kennebec, SD. It was probably inexpensive, it had no creature comforts and it served its purpose. Maybe it hauled blind shooters like me around on hunts of yesteryear but it never drove in a parade. As I drove around from farmstead to farmstead over a few days, I think I answered my own question; there are tens and likely hundreds of thousands of lost vehicles like this. Evidently, their only use these days is target practice.

It makes me realize that the vehicles we insure are truly an elite group, each with an elevated purpose. Even if a collector car of today was originally a utility vehicle like this International truck or a salesman's sedan or a plain-Jane four-door hard top, it is now a cherished object for someone and it made the cut. There is, after all, a kind of natural selection with the cars we drive. In their days of active use, the first ones are likely lost to traffic accidents or acts of God. The ones that make it a few more years are repaired and maintained and then slowly retired or traded in or scrapped. Only a few are saved from the scrap heaps and fields of South Dakota to be preserved or restored and then elevated to a new use of providing smiles, fueling egos, getting girls, winning races and trophies or just putting in a few scenic miles on a Sunday afternoon. There are likely only single-digit millions of these rare machines left in the entire world and their kind will likely never be made again. We at Hagerty are the trustees of the most cherished vehicles ever built and I, for one, promise never accidentally to shoot one again."

McKeel Hagerty wrote this blog to the employees of Hagerty Insurance on his recent experience. Thank you, for sharing your reflection with other collectors in classic car hobby.
